I happened to catch an article the other day about the "service flag".
It inspired me to make this banner and write this tutorial.

FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
and the background image you can get here.
Right click and save to your hardrive.

STEP 1:
Create a new image 90 x 180 background white.

STEP 2:
Set your foreground color to blue (Red:30 Green:37 Blue:63 #1E253F)
Set your background color to red (Red:144 Green:20 Blue:22 #901416)

STEP 3:
Go to Image||add borders||symmetric checked||size=36

STEP 4:
Create your star in the center. Use the star2 preset, antialias and vector checked. Foreground is set to null, background to the blue. Line width 1 #1 solid line.
Hold down the shift key and draw your star watching the numbers in the lower left until it is about 50,48.
Go to Objects||Align||Center in canvas.
On layer palette convert that layer to raster and merge visible.

STEP 5:
Go to Image||Canvas Size change width to 210 and height to 300 center horizontal and center vertical both checked.

STEP 6:
Change your foreground and background style to pattern and use stained wood pattern (comes with PSP7, however if you don't have it click here.) scale 50% angle 0

STEP 7:
Change your preset shape to ellipse and again holding the shift key draw out a circle about 20,20.
Move it up to just left of the banner and convert to raster layer.
Do inner bevel with settings below

  • Shape=pie shape (2nd from left on 1st row)
  • Width=31
  • Smoothness=100
  • Depth=24
  • Ambience= minus 42
  • Shininess=0
  • Color=white
  • Angle=18
  • Intensitiy=50
  • Elevation=59

Go to Layers||Duplicate then Image||Mirror

STEP 8:
Turn off your banner layer. Change your preset shape to rectangle, antialias and vector checked. Line width 6.
Draw a line from one of your circles to the other. (Stained wood pattern in styles)

STEP 9:
Convert that layer to raster layer and apply the same inner bevel as before.

STEP 10:
WITH the banner layer still off move the bar behind the two circles and merge those layers.
Move the banner layer above the bar layer and turn it back on.

STEP 11:
With your selection tool set to rectangle feather 0 antialias checked draw a rectangle along the top of your banner approx. 15 pixels wide.
Mine started at 23, 24 the third set of numbers was 162,15.
While your ants are running around apply the same inner bevel.

STEP 12:
Merge your layers and increase canvas size to 250 wide leaving it at 300 in height.

STEP 13:
Add a new layer and move it below the merged layer.
Open the blue star background and change your foreground style to the blue star background scale 50% angle 0.
Flood fill your new layer with this background.

STEP 14:
Make your banner layer active.
Effects||3D Effects||Drop shadow and apply the following settings.

  • Vertical and Horizontal=5
  • Opacity=100
  • Blur=15
  • Color=black

If you want to give it more depth apply the drop shadow a second time.

STEP 15:
Make the red your background color again. Image||add borders||symmetric||15.
Using your magic wand tolerance 0 feather 0 select your red border.
Flood fill with your stained wood pattern but change the angle to 90 (this is actually personal choice, I used it at 0 and 90 and both are good).

STEP 16:
While still selected go to selections||invert then effects||3d effects||cutout and apply the following cutout.

  • Horizontal and vertical=10
  • Opacity=100
  • Blur=20
  • Shadow color=black
  • Fill interior with color=UNchecked

Repeat the cutout using -10 for horizontal and vertical.

STEP 17:
Invert the selection again and apply the same inner bevel as before.
Selections none and you are finished.
